Vignola

While touring, already in the first ten days, we have been to so many different places. It's so interesting just hopping on the train, and stepping off into a completely different world. From the rooftop patio of the hotel in Florence, looking out over the red rooftops and green hills, with the Duomo towering over everything, to a high speed train rocketing through tunnels, through the cores of mountains, to the hustle and bustle of Bologna Centrale station, to boring sandwiches at an internet cafe, toilets that are a hole in the floor, to regional trains stopping every three minutes, in the sweltering humidity of the Italian afternoon.. We arrived in Vignola four hours early, on purpose, so we could enjoy some beer and our books, and not be rushed. Gianni, our very kind host, came to pick us up in his Polo VW. Gianni is part of organizing shows at the Ribalta, an old community building converted into a recording and performance space. The stage was set up outside because of the beautiful weather, on the lawn, with carpet, couch, and flashing lights, with the back drop of the castle of Vignola. The other band that we shared the bill with was called Mesta, a man and woman duo from Serbia. With just guitar and two voices, they created an atmosphere of ancient traditions, using a deep open-tuned guitar, drones and heartfelt songwriting. The community of people at the Ribalta were very open and welcoming. They fed us sangria and pizza, forgave of for our lack of Italian, and were appreciative of our music. It was a neat experience to be singing outside, next to the castle, with the cool night breeze rustling the cherry trees..
